Circus

I felt that this was one of the more entertaining films we have watched. Circus had a pretty good story and was quite funny at times. It is a very socialist realist film. The parts that really showed this where near then end when the people where so accepting of Dixon having a black child. It made America look bad while promoting Russia. Also at the end they were all marching together showing Russian pride. I felt like this was ironic because the movie portrayed Russia as a happy place even though they were going through extremely scary time. One thing with this movie that confused me at times was when they would switch between the languages. It made it hard for me to figure out who could understand them in the film. Over all i felt that this was a good film and really enjoyed the art in the circus performances.

  1. We definitely do get a smorgasbord of languages at times with some characters mishing and mashing Russian with English (Marion in particular) and even sometimes Russian, English and German all together (the villain von Kneishchitz). I think it's designed to create a bit of a comic effect--but it's interesting to wonder how much the Russian audience would have understood of what was said. Did you notice that a few scenes had Russian subtitles toward the bottom--that is, when von Kneishchitz and Marion are arguing?
The circus in Moscow is incredible--I had the good fortune once to see a performance there. And it's something I most definitely recommend to anyone who visits that city!
